Bacteriostatic water is sterile water containing 0.9% benzyl alcohol as a preservative. In a laboratory setting it is used as a solvent for reconstituting lyophilised (freeze-dried) research peptides into solution. The benzyl alcohol inhibits bacterial growth, which is what distinguishes it from single-use sterile water.

What bacteriostatic water is

Bacteriostatic water is water for injection that has been rendered sterile and then preserved with approximately 0.9% benzyl alcohol. The term bacteriostatic means it inhibits the growth of bacteria — it is a static agent rather than a cidal one. It does not kill bacteria outright; it suppresses their ability to multiply.

That distinction matters in practice. Because the preservative suppresses bacterial growth, a vial of bacteriostatic water can be accessed more than once over a period of time, whereas unpreserved sterile water is a single-use product. In laboratory work where a lyophilised compound is reconstituted and the resulting solution is drawn on across several occasions, that multi-access property is the reason bacteriostatic water is the standard choice.

How it differs from sterile water and saline

Why lyophilised compounds need a solvent at all

Research peptides are supplied lyophilised — freeze-dried into a solid cake or powder — because peptides are considerably more stable in a dry state than in solution. In solution, peptides are subject to hydrolysis, oxidation, aggregation and microbial contamination; removing the water slows all of those processes dramatically and gives the material a workable shelf life.

Storage and handling

Bacteriostatic water is typically stored at controlled room temperature and protected from light, with the closure kept intact until use. Once a vial has been accessed, the preservative continues to suppress bacterial growth, but the vial is not indefinitely stable and manufacturers state a limited in-use period.

Handling, storage and disposal of laboratory reagents are the responsibility of the purchaser, and should be carried out in an appropriate research setting by a person qualified to do so.
